How to Brew a Better Cup of Coffee at Home
5 minutes · Any basic coffee maker
Most home coffee problems come down to three things: grind size, water temperature, and ratio. Fix those and almost any method improves.
The basics
- Use a ratio of about 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water, adjusted to taste.
- Water should be just off the boil — around 195–205°F (90–96°C).
- Match your grind size to your brewing method: coarse for French press, medium for drip, fine for espresso.
- Use filtered water when possible — tap water with a strong taste will affect the final cup.
Tip: buy whole beans and grind right before brewing. Coffee starts losing flavor within minutes of being ground.
