Easy Chocolate Cake Recipe
6 servings · 45 minutes · Beginner friendly
A good chocolate cake does not need a long list of ingredients or special equipment. This version uses one bowl, basic pantry staples, and comes together in under an hour.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs, 1 cup buttermilk, 1 cup hot coffee, 1/2 cup vegetable oil
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round pans.
- Whisk the dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
- Add the eggs, buttermilk, and oil, then mix until smooth.
- Stir in the hot coffee last — the batter will be thin, that is normal.
- Divide between the pans and bake for 30–35 minutes.
Tip: the hot coffee does not make the cake taste like coffee — it simply deepens the chocolate flavor.
Let the layers cool completely before frosting, otherwise the frosting will slide right off.
