Dog Training Basics: Teaching 'Sit'

5–10 minutes per session · Any age dog

"Sit" is usually the first command taught because it is simple, useful, and builds the foundation for other training.

Steps

  1. Hold a small treat close to your dog's nose.
  2. Slowly move your hand up and back over their head — their bottom should naturally lower to the ground.
  3. The moment they sit, say "Sit" and give the treat immediately.
  4. Repeat 5–10 times per session, a few times a day.
  5. Once your dog reliably sits with the hand motion, start using just the word without the hand signal.
Tip: keep sessions short and end on a success. Frustration on either end slows down training more than it helps.
